Day 4 - North Platte, NE to Casper, WY

Our breakfast with the Knoll's surpassed expectations--especially the rhubarb jelly on French toast.

Early morning walk along the canal.

The Knoll's B and B overlooks a canal, and on our morning walk we discovered a colony of Barn Swallows who make their mud nest on the underside of the canal bridge.

The drive from North Platte on highway 26 presents some of the flat grass lands we thought would be the common feature of Nebraska, but even this stretch of prairie gave way to rolling sand hills and small cliffs carved out by the North Platte river.  Highway 26 covers the same ground as the Pony Express and is part of the Oregon trail.

Mormons traveled this trail too.

In the distance we can see Mount Laramei; part of the Medicine Bow National Forest
The Fort Laramie Bridge, built in 1875, spanns the North Platte river.

  1. Hey y'all! Of course I'm jealous, but having said that, my x-country route where we thought we'd be driving about 8 hours a day, turned out to be more like 10 or 12 hours a day, so that part, maybe, I don't envy!
However, throughout all the time we spent through each strange state, I had forgotten completely having been through Wyoming, though I'd driven all day through it, but in my defense, I had called it, "Wyyyyyyyy-O-MIN!" the whole time, so I can't be blamed really. It is seriously cowboy-y though, so don't be surprised! Lots o' hats and trucks. Beautiful though!

There's nothing like really seeing how the country's landscape changes so dramatically along the course of even just a day sometimes, so take note of it all. Take photos even if you don't feel you have time! I had smeg-loads and they weren't nearly enough!

I like Ophelia for the Garmin-gal, and don't think she might go mad and send you god knows where, because she WILL, there's a Dr. Who episode about it, a two-parter!
    XOXO, Miss You Bunches!! Kelli
